On Monday, the World Health Organization declared a global public health emergency, an action it has taken only three times before, in response to the spread of the Zika virus. Officials estimate that it will infect up to four million people by the end of the year. The epicenter of the outbreak is Brazil, where four thousand suspected cases have occurred and two hundred and seventy confirmed, but Zika has been identified in twenty other countries and territories in South and Central America and the Caribbean, and some have been reported in the United States by travelers returning from Brazil. |
