For the first time in decades, the number of new cases of diabetes in the US has finally started to decline. For about 25 years, the rate had been increasing steadily, until 2008, when the numbers started to drop - but not in a way that was statistically meaningful. But this week, new data showed for 2014 showed that the decline is real: 2014 saw 1.4 million new cases of diabetes, which was down from 1.7 million in 2008. It's hard to say whether or not this is because of public efforts to prevent diabetes or if the disease has just peaked in this population, but there is growing evidence that Americans' health habits have finally begun to improve. |
