Cesarean-born babies have always been at risk of multiple health problems – and the same is true for the mother. A groundbreaking new study, conducted over 15 years in Scotland, is one of the largest and longest to explore the differences between C-sections and other deliveries. The results? Babies born during planned C-sections experienced more health problems than those born during emergency C-sections. Study author Dr. Mairead Black hypothesized that the process of labor, which can be neatly avoided during planned births, helps to bring the baby into contact with bacteria from the mother, which might help with immune system development. |
