All I Want for Christmas Is Herd Immunity

My arm is sore but I'm very excited.

My arm is sore but I'm very excited. On Monday, I decided to schedule my COVID-19 booster appointment so that I can feel safer heading into holiday gatherings.

The process was simple. I made an appointment at my local grocery store, showed up with my vaccination card, and voilà.

Now I'm one of the nearly 40 million people who has received their booster shots.

Let's talk about it.
Today's Top Story
Boosters For All
Booster shots are now available to fully vaccinated adults over the age of 18 in the United States. You can search for a vaccine site near you on vaccines.gov and schedule an appointment at a pharmacy or a community-based site.

With the emergence of Omicron and the holiday season in full swing, the FDA and CDC are recommending you get a booster for extra protection.

While the COVID-19 vaccines are critical in ending the pandemic, studies have suggested that their effectiveness wanes over time. Booster shots aim to extend this protection.
Know More
Good news—Your booster shot doesn't have to be the same brand as your first two doses of the vaccine. The FDA said you can "mix and match" your shots. For example, if your first and second dose of the vaccine was Pfizer, you can get the Moderna booster.

If you received the Pfizer of Moderna vaccine, you must wait at least 6 months before receiving your booster shot. However, if you received the single dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine, you are eligible for the booster after 2 months.
Feel Better
To prepare for your booster shot, bring your vaccine card, drink plenty of water, and have Tylenol ready in case you feel sore and/or sick afterwards.

Heat Waves Can Be Dangerous, Even If You're Young
I get cold when the weather drops below 75 degrees. I love the heat, but a new study sheds light on the dangers of extreme heat to people under the age of 64. The study analyzed hospital visits on the days of extreme heat—temperatures of at least 93 degrees. Researchers found a 7.8% increase in ER visits on those days. Not only for heat-related illnesses such as fatigue, cramps, exhaustion, and heat stroke, but also chronic kidney disease and mental health issues. Due to climate change, extreme heat is expected to intensify, and experts urge that we take caution in these environments.

Here's How Long COVID Stays In Your Body
When is it OK to be around people after having COVID-19? Experts say that generally, a person who has tested positive for the virus is no longer contagious 10 days after the onset of their symptoms. But this varies from person to person. People who experienced severe illness or have weakened immune systems may continue to feel symptoms for longer periods of time. The best defense again COVID-19 is vaccination.

Maria I. Rosas, MD, a pediatric infectious disease specialist with KIDZ Medical, shared in an interview with Verywell why parents shouldn't worry that the COVID-19 vaccine causes fertility issues in children.
There is no evidence that the Pfizer COVID vaccine—the one currently approved for children 5-11 years old—causes infertility. Neither the vaccine ingredients nor the antibodies made by your body after the vaccine affect fertility.
