Tracee Colposcopy Because the Pap smear can only screen for potential problems, not diagnose them, your gynecologist may want to take a closer look at your cervix to determine the cause of your abnormal Pap smear results. He will perform an examination called a colposcopy. Cryosurgery Of The Cervix Cervical cryosurgery or cryotherapy is a gynecological treatment that freezes a section of the cervix. Cryosurgery of the cervix is most often done to destroy abnormal cervical cells that show changes that may lead to cancer. These changes are called precancerous cells. LEEP Procedure If your doctor has told you that you need to have a LEEP procedure, it's because your annual Pap smear indicated the presence of abnormal cervical cells, or cervical dysplasia. The LEEP procedure is one of several procedures your doctor has available to help diagnose and treat abnormal cervical cells. Laparoscopy Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique used in procedures such as tubal ligation, gallbladder removal or hiatal hernia repair. It is normally performed in the outpatient surgery unit of a hospital. In most cases, patients can return home a few hours after a laproscopic procedure. How To Perform Vaginal Self Exam While not recommended by medical professionals, some women give themselves vaginal and cervical self-exams. Supporters of these exams say they help women learn what is normal, allowing women to more quickly recognize changes -- a way that you can get to know your body better. But, keep in mind that a self-exam should in no way replace your annual professional pelvic exam, during which the Pap smear and other tests can detect important microscopic changes. Vaginal Dryness During Menopause If you've been experiencing vaginal dryness and you're over 40, there is a good chance that approaching menopause or perimenopause may be the culprit. If so, rest assured that you are definitely not alone. Vaginal dryness is a common occurrence among women during the latter part of their reproductive lives. Are Vaginal Douches Safe? A vaginal douche is a process of rinsing or cleaning the vagina by forcing water or another solution into the vaginal cavity to flush away vaginal discharge or other contents. Vaginal douches are available over-the-counter and are made in a variety of fragrances by several manufacturers; they are also available by prescription to treat certain conditions or prepare for certain procedures.
