Gas Stoves Might Be Killing the Environment and Us

Many chefs swear by gas stoves because they can control heat far better compared to electric and induction cooktops.

Many chefs swear by gas stoves because they can control heat far better compared to electric and induction cooktops. But here's the problem: Gas stoves are really bad for the environment—and potentially, your health.

A Rundown on Gas Stoves
A new study found that gas stoves could leak methane—a greenhouse gas—even when they're turned off.

Methane is about 86 times more powerful than carbon dioxide in warming the planet. But since it lingers in the atmosphere for a shorter time (about a decade), experts think that reducing methane would slow down global warming significantly.

The amount of methane released by gas stoves is not enough to pose immediate safety hazards. But when gas stoves are in use, the combustion creates nitrogen oxides, which are air pollutants that could be extremely harmful for people who have asthma, COPD, or heart disease.

Chronic exposure to nitrogen oxides could also lead to permanent lung damage or respiratory infections in children.
Know More
There's no federal safety limit for indoor gas pollution. But researchers found that, if you use your gas stove without ventilation, the level of nitrogen dioxide could exceed the outdoor exposure limit within minutes.
Feel Better
Turn on your range hood whenever you cook to reduce the level of nitrogen oxides in your home. If you don't have a vent, open a window and turn on a fan. The size and intensity of your burner also determines how much gas is being released.

Is Omicron Hurting Your Back?
Turns out sore throat isn't the only unique Omicron symptom. Some people infected with COVID-19 are also reporting back and joint pain. Experts say the increase in back pain may have to do with our sedentary lifestyle. We're always looking at our phone or hunching over our keyboard—our muscles are probably weakened and unprepared for inflammation from the virus.

PFAS Found in Waterproof and Stain-Resistant Products
Researchers found toxic "forever chemicals"—PFAS—in many water- or stain-resistant products, including bedsheets, rain boots and tablecloths. These chemicals take thousands of years to break down and they're present in the environment and in our bodies. But currently, there's no federal regulation on PFAS and it's really up to each manufacturer to decide what goes into the products. As a rule of thumb, try to avoid products that claim to have stain or water resistance in order to limit your PFAS exposure.
