Headlines for a healthier you | | Claire Wolters, Staff Writer | | | Our List of Period Problems Just Got Longer With PFAS | | Thinx period underwear settled a class action lawsuit last week after being sued for using PFAS in their products and lying about it. PFAS, also known as "forever chemicals," are associated with adverse health outcomes such as birth defects and cancers. There are no laws that prohibit the use of PFAS in clothing or require manufacturers to test for the chemicals, so consumers often have to guess which brands are safe. Graham Peaslee, PhD, a researcher who found PFAS in Thinx products back in 2020, said he had met with the company at the time to discuss the health risks associated with these toxic chemicals. "Thinx didn't think it was that big of an issue. The settlement seems a bit like karma," he said. | Know More | When it comes to clothing, PFAS are commonly found in water-resistant or sweat-wicking materials. Because period underwear is designed to absorb fluids and prevent leakage, it is more likely to contain PFAS than cotton panties. | Feel Better | Not all period underwear contains PFAS, which means it's possible for Thinx and others to detoxify their supply too. Peaslee found that Luna period underwear was totally PFAS-free. The brand Period. also claims to be free of PFAS toxins. | | | | What Else Should You Know | | Pfizer's Bivalent Booster Doesn't Increase Stroke Risk | The CDC and FDA recently alerted the public of an investigation into whether Pfizer's bivalent booster shot increased stroke risk in older adults. The investigation was prompted by a signal in one of CDC's many vaccine databases suggesting a safety concern for strokes. For now, no other database has indicated this increased risk. They will discuss the status of their investigation on Thursday during an FDA panel meeting. | | | | | CDC: Avoid Enoki Mushrooms Due to Listeria Concerns | Enoki mushrooms have been one of the most recalled foods in recent years, with 20 recalls since 2020.
