A healthy brain can focus more easily, retain more information, and hold on to important short- and long-term memories. Here are some key ways you can prioritize your brain health.
Let's take five minutes to see this week in a new light. | | | We put a lot of emphasis on nourishing our physical body with exercise and nutrition, but taking time to prioritize our brain health is important, too. A healthy brain is arguably one that can focus more easily, retain more information, and hold on to important short- and long-term memories. Here, we outline some key ways you can foster better brain health. | | | Mental abilities that tend to decrease with age include processing speed, reaction time, decision making, short-term memory, and planning skills." | | | What we put into our bodies is inextricably linked to our brain health. For example, long-term studies tell us that the risk of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia is doubled when systolic blood pressure is outside of a healthy range. Prioritizing foods that assist in desirable cholesterol levels can also help. Additionally, maintaining healthy levels of vitamins D, B12, and omega-3s has been linked with better brain health and cognitive function. Regular exercise also plays a vital role in our brain health by promoting blood flow to the brain and keeping blood vessels healthy. | A recent study found that certain brain degenerative processes associated with aging weren't as common among academics. The study followed over 200 senior citizens for more than seven years. They exhibited fewer signs of brain degeneration and an ability to quickly process information. This implies that education and lifelong learning helps us use our brains to their maximum potential. In that sense, you can think of your brain as a muscle: the more it's used, the more flexible, quick, and dependable it is. | | | Along with nutrition, physical exercise, and life-long learning, partaking in daily brain games can potentially help keep this organ in tip-top shape. Think Sudoku puzzles, crosswords, word scrambles, riddles, and even trendy games such as Wordle. Some additional ways you can exercise your brain are by writing with your non-dominant hand , learning a new skill, socializing with others, and meditation. (The latter three have additional benefits, as well!) | Ways to Stay Positive This Week | | | Ways to Nurture Your Mind and Body | -
This week, take 10 minutes to think about your daily habits that might impact your brain health. Then, write down something you can adjust this week to promote better health. Maybe it's a dietary swap, adding a walk to your nightly routine, practicing meditation, or playing a word game. Why is making this adjustment important to you? | -
