It's no secret that we tend to be harder on ourselves than anyone else. From scrutinizing our appearance in the mirror to underselling our accomplishments, many struggle to feel good about who they are from the inside and out.
Let's take five minutes to see this week in a new light. | | | It's no secret that we tend to be harder on ourselves than anyone else. From scrutinizing our appearance in the mirror to underselling our accomplishments, many struggle to feel good about who they are from the inside and out. Self-love doesn't always come naturally, and often requires hard work. Here are some simple ways you can start feeling better about yourself—starting right now.
| | | Having self-esteem not only impacts how you feel about and treat yourself—it can also play a role in how you allow others to treat you." | | | Boiled down to its core, self-esteem simply means viewing and treating yourself with love and respect. It doesn't just mean focusing on your good qualities, but rather accepting every part of your being and awarding yourself patience, love, and kindness. High self-esteem corresponds with positive mental health and physical health. It allows you to develop helpful coping skills, face adversity with confidence, and re-frame negative experiences so you can use them to your advantage versus dwelling on them. | Improving self-esteem takes practice. It may feel strange or awkward at first, and you may experience blips, but over time it'll start to feel like second nature. Here are five effective ways you can practice self-love to improve your self-esteem. - Avoid Negative Self-Talk: Sometimes we may not even realize how frequently we bombard ourselves with negative thoughts or feelings. Curbing this language takes time. When you catch yourself, replace the negative thought with something positive.
- Accept Compliments: In addition to using kinder language with yourself, accept the compliments given to you by others. Sometimes we dismiss them, but saying thank you and allowing yourself to see what others see can improve your self-esteem.
- Embrace Your Flaws: The reality is that absolutely nobody is perfect. By accepting your own flaws as part of your humanity, you can practice more self-love. It also can encourage self-improvement.
- Eliminate Exposure to Unhelpful Media: This includes over-edited or unobtainable celebrity images and body shaming culture. The less it's part of your world, the better your body image.
- Start a Gratitude Journal: The more grateful we feel about the world around us, the better we feel in general. Keeping a simple gratitude journal can help you appreciate the good in your life.
